Summary: Space Amoeba- A Great Monster Movie
Comment: Space Amoeba is a great sci-fi monster movie. It is better than most people think it is. The monsters are different than those you would normally see, but thats a good thing.

The acting is good, the monsters are well designed (especially Kameba, the turtle). The movie has a lot of action for a kaiju film and it keeps the viewer interested.

This movie is worth the price! Buy this movie and enjoy it again and again! A great monster movie for a great price.

Summary: YES ! THIS IS THE LONG LOST 'YOG MONSTER FROM SPACE'!
Comment: I had not seen this movie since I was a kid and I was really amazed I came across this on Amazon under the title 'Space Amoeba' which was the original title released in Japan. This is another silly outing from the Toho studios during their hey day! I can't resist these goofy films from my youth, even though they are silly with hilarious FX. They do bring us "Godzilla/Toho" fans back to a simpler time, when all you needed was a creepy flick on TV(Creature Features,Chiller Theater) and a few plastic army men to keep you happy. I spent many hours in the lobby of the local theater during Matinees recreating the fight scenes with my friends and destroying popcorn boxes etc. LOL! Aaahhh...the good ol' days! The DVD treatment is very good here but, too bad most of it is in Japanese.....At least they give us sub-titles to understand what they are talking about. The film itself is presented in widescreen with English or Japanese audio and option sub-titles. The DVD transfer is better than most of these Toho films have seen...anyway I'm glad I have it!...it was a fun trip back in time!

Summary: Space Amoeba Bombs.
Comment: I'm a fan of the old 1950's style sci-fi (DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, KRONOS, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH, etc.) and Japanese Hero shows like the original ULTRAMAN so I always enjoy a good monster romp. I recently rented Ishiro Honda's SPACE AMOEBA (also known as YOG: MONSTER FROM SPACE) in hopes of such an hour-and-a-half of monster fun and adventure. As expected, the movie did have some impressive looking monsters, but the romping, fun and adventure was less than exciting. The rubber-suited men portrayed a giant cuttlefish, a giant crab and a giant turtle (known respectively as Gezora, Ganime and Kameba), but strangely enough, no SPACE AMOEBA. Perhaps the blue, alien, space mist is supposed to be the SPACE AMOEBA, but the movie is never clear on this point. Nevertheless, space amoeba or no space amoeba, the picture is a total bore. I forward- advanced through the last 30 minutes in hopes of getting to the good stuff, but the film never delivered. Sure, there's a supposed monster battle at the end, but none of the creatures have any personality. Probably the best scene is where the giant crab fall over a cliff and lands on his back on a pile of gasoline barrels. The hero of the picture then shoots the barrels with a rifle blowing the helpless creature into a million pieces. This was Ishiro Honda's last picture and it's not hard to see why. If you want to see good, old-fashioned monsters watch ULTRAMAN series 1, volumes 1 & 2 or any of the classic 50's sci-fi mentioned above because the crisp, clean DVD transfer and DVD extras do not save SPACE AMOEBA from being a giant monster bomb.

Summary: One of my favorites
Comment: I'm not really going to add anything to what's already been etensively described in the other reviews here, except this: I am glad to have this film on DVD - I think it's a great old "bad" movie, beautifully filmed in Guam in the usual visually sensitive Toho manner. My only complaint (and basis for 4 instead of 5 stars) is that the English audio track on this DVD is not the AIP (Americal International Pictures) dubbing. For people who like these films (and who are Americans or grew up here) the best soundtracks to include on a DVD of such a film would appear to be (1) the original langauge soundtrack (here, Japanese, which this DVD has) and (2) the original dubbed soundtrack that was part of the movie when it was released here and later shown on TV in the US. In the case of this movie, the particular vocal and acting skills of the actors in the AIP dubbing really did add quite a bit of (probably not always intended) atmosphere and nuance to this film. ... In any case, I was glad to see this movie appearing on a DVD, particularly as it's been so nicely put together otherwise. I only wish that they had included the AIP English dubbing which has much more "personality" than the blander, more neutral-sounding English dub that made it onto this DVD. ... Notwithstanding the above, if you're interested in this film this DVD is very much worth getting.
