Summary: HORRIBLE Subscription Service!
Comment: I purchased a gift subscription online last October, 2007, but it is April 2008, and my aunt and uncle have yet to receive their issue.

I called the DPP subscription department in January, and they said they had no record of my order. Funny, since I had a printed confirmation in my files...Anyway, I went through the ordering process (again) over the telephone, and that was supposed to take care of it.

Fast-forward to April, 2008, and still no issues had been delivered! I called customer service and the rep said that "the late date" (meaning the latest date of arrival) was end of March. I asked when they could expect an issue.. Apparently, the next "late date" is May 2, and I should call back if they don't get the next one.

We reconfirmed the mailing address (correct), and the rep suggested that the issue got lost in the mail. This is possible, but I guess we'll have to wait until May to see if this happens again.

They wouldn't issue a refund, but said they could add an issue to the end of the subscription.

This is ridiculous...What company takes 5-6 months to get ONE issue delivered?!!!

I have never written a negative review like this, and I understand that my comments don't review the articles. However, I purchased a magazine gift SUBSCRIPTION and the delivery service is what I bought, along with the magazine itself. If Digital Photo Pro can't deliver on their promise to send a gift (that's been paid for), then others deserve to know.

Update: Well, they never received the May issue, so I insisted on a refund, which they sent to my aunt and uncle. I didn't ask them to send the check to them, though. I guess they didn't they consider that i might get them a different gift with the refund? Hands down, this is my WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE EVER.

Summary: Wish I could rate it!
Comment: I sure wish I could rate it but I haven't even received the first issue yet! I contacted the magazine and they say it should be here in 4-6 more weeks. I placed my order back in February and it's now April!!!! It's not Amazon's fault!!!

Summary: I look forward to it every month
Comment: I always find this magazine well written and informative. I enjoy it from cover to cover. It is geared towards the professional (or wannabe professional) photographer. The review of equipment and software are great, the showcase of up and coming photographers is inspiring and the images in the magazine are of high quality. Personally it is my favorite photography mag.

Summary: Perhaps the best General-Interest photography magazine
Comment: Beginning in the mid 1960's, I grew up with titles like Popular Photography, Modern Photography and Camera 35 (boy do I miss that one...). Then as now, these magazines often targeted the same readership and skill level. Therefore, it did not take long to reach a point (as will most people who love photography and stick with it for more than a few years) where boredom set in with most of the mainstream magazines. I don't need another article on "What Pros Carry in Their Gadget Bags" or "How to Take Better Photos By Using a Tripod." Nor do I need a ten page Photokina walkaround because I read all that stuff online two months ago. And please spare me yet another Buyer's Guide Special Issue that gives me one tiny hard to read line of information on each and every consumer camera that I have absolutely no intention of buying. Most of these magazines are great for the folks who are just getting into photography but for the rest of us there's too little meat, too much repetition, too many ads.

I'll admit, there are a few amazing magazines out there... most of the best ones are the art magazines like Black and White or Aperture... short on technical information but great for inspiration. And many of them go the extra mile when it comes to print quality and paper. And they're expensive.

What the world needs is a general interest photo magazine that is written for the professional and advanced amateur... one that has a nice mix of technology, techniques and well-reproduced samplers of contemporary work by both established and promising photographers. For a while, Photo Electronic Imaging filled the bill nicely, but it was subscription only and the lack of newstand sales finally killed them. Digial Photo Pro arrived on the scene just in time to fill the void. By publishing a few early articles targeted at studio photographers and owners of high-zoot medium format digital equipment in the first few issues they established from the start their intent to serve the serious photographer. In the years since they have seldom disappointed, aside from the fact that they remain a bimonthly publication. After I'm done reading each issue, I'll get to a point (long before the next issue arrives) where I want more, so naturally I head off to the bookstore hoping that one of the other mainstream magazines has decided to publish something of interest. I don't know why I bother: "We Pick the Best Printer for Under $100." "How to Shoot Great Sunsets." Please...

Go ahead and subscribe to this one. I'm not saying it's the only photography magazine that you'll ever want or need, but it could well be the one that disappoints the least... and that makes getting each and every issue worthwhile.
