At under $50, the base would be a good buy even without the understated shade. Ours arrived with the switch bent, but that was easily remedied without tools. Since the lamp has been in our den, it has withstood a severe blow to the shade with no ill effect. (It's sturdy.) This is also an excellent reading lamp.
