Editorial Review:
Everything new parents need to know about the care (and feeding) of an infant, from the authors of What to Expect® When You're Expecting. Covers monthly growth and development, feeding for every age and stage, sleep strategies that really work.

Filled with the most practical tips (how to give a bath, decode your baby's crying, what to buy for baby, and when to return to work) and the most up-to-date medical advice (the latest on vaccines, vitamins, illnesses, SIDS, safety, and more).

Reassuring Answers to Hundreds of Questions:
  • What's the best kind of car seat for my newborn?
  • How do I know if my baby's getting enough to eat?
  • How can I tell if my baby is really sick? When should I call the doctor?
  • Should I sign my baby up for classes?
  • Should I be worried that my baby isn't crawling yet?
  • How do I cope with my colicky baby?

The only book on infant care to address the physical as well as the emotional needs of the entire family.

Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I know when she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year is brought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "What Your Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month's Checkups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May Be Concerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."

Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts, the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and sibling relationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many ways of stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers in Part Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on common childhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particular strength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition for both mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest recommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectives are controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), this book remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as they toddle through their baby's first year.

Summary: Great condition, very inexpensive, choose standard shipment!
Comment: The book arrived in nearly perfect condition, and it was practically free. However, I paid for expedited shipment, which was a waste of money because they use the Standard mail. The book arrived on the 9th day, this is not an expedited service in my mind, so I recommend paying for standard shipment.

Summary: An invaluable reference
Comment: My husband got me this book just before our son was born and I must admit that I thought I would never crack the cover. After a couple of months with a newborn, however, I opened it up and started reading. I only wish I had started sooner!! Yes, this book addresses some controversial childrearing techniques (eg, crying it out, co-sleeping), but I don't think that it is extremely biased toward one side or the other any more than most of the pediatricians I know (and I work in a hospital). This book is great for answering those child-rearing questions between the well baby check-ups--questions like "Why has my baby suddenly stopped soiling his diaper 5 times a day?" or "When should I start my baby on finger foods?" It also has some great information on the symptoms of common ailments so that you know what to look for, how to treat it and when you should call the doctor.

Let's face it...no book about raising a child is going to be perfect for every parent, but this one is definitely a good one to have around.

Summary: good book, but....
Comment: this book is great, however I am having a hard time deciding which month my child is in and what chapter I am supposed to be reading. when my child is 3months old (12 weeks) I am unsure whether I am supposed to be reading the "in the 3rd month" chapter or the "in the 4th month" chapter, it is kind of confusing, it would be better if the chapters where labeled with the corresponding weeks old, instead of months. Otherwise this book has a lot of great information.

Summary: Helpful, Encouraging, and definately a good choice
Comment: I have, in the months prior to my daughter's birth and since her arrival four months ago, gone through dozens of baby books, in that desperate attempt many new mothers make to find all the answers and do it all right the first time. This is the book I came up with...of course, I am learning daily that there is no such thing as 'all the answers' and it is impossible to get everything right the first time, epecially considering that there has never been another baby exactly like yours on the earth before. But, despite this discovery, as wonderfully frightening and freeing as it is, I find this book to be a jewel, a comfort, and a real help when I really need some kind of reassurence and guidence. No, it's not perfect, and, of course, it doesn't cover absolutely every question you will ever have about your baby...but it comes pretty close. It's unbias, clear, imformative, engagingly written, and guiltfree. It doesn't condone or condem either breastfeeding or bottlefeeding, it gives the newest information we have on various health issues, including whether it's safe to give a baby younger then 6 months water, and whether the experts think it's healthy to try the 'cry it out' system on a young baby (they don't). All in all, I think this is a great book. I am an attachment parent, so I don't really know what the reviewers who said this wasn't for attachment parenting were talking about...unless they meant an older edition then this one. Anyway, I really reccomend it!

Disclaimer: I can't spell, and I know it...but please realize that I don't have time as a mother of a young baby to go through and worry about that at this time

Summary: Expect Allot of Advice That You Don't Need
Comment: This book is for the type of mom who doesn't really trust herself, and who wants validations for every little detail that she needs to know about for babies. Not all of the advice is bad, but do you really need it? Why not trust yourself and do what feels appropriate?

Dietary advice, as is typical with pregnancy and child raising books, is terrible. Suggesting for example, to start your baby on a low fat diet early. It suggests avoiding butter. :(

Butter is a sacred food for babies, for example, ghee, clarified butter, is known all over India as a special food to feed infants.
Alot of the advice just isn't right in this book.
